What’s it like to be a refugee?

Here’s your chance to find out. Australia’s first-ever simulated refugee camp opens in Melbourne this month for 3 weeks. Visitors will have a chance to experience the harsh realities of life for millions of people around the world.

Refugee Realities is an interactive experience putting you in the shoes of a person displaced by war and conflict. Visitors take a journey towards a refugee camp, try to survive without the comforts of home and then find a permanent place to live. Hear first-hand the extraordinary and moving stories of former refugees now living in Australia.

A two-hour tour includes:

  • negotiating with border guards
  • navigating a minefield
  • receiving rations
  • building shelter with tarpaulins and bamboo
  • finding relatives through a family tracing service
  • collecting water

Refugee Realities will educate people about our human rights to protection, assistance and asylum.
